The green side of optimization

Optimization is usually associated with cost savings for the same activity, but that’s not its only outcome. Imagine that optimizing the routes of a national passenger bus company reduces mileage by 5%. If the company previously ran 100,000 kilometers a day, the savings would amount to 5,000 kilometers.

In terms of fuel, this means: 5,000 km × 30 liters/100 km = 1,500 liters per day. Since each liter of gasoline consumed emits 2.3 kg of CO₂, this translates into 3,450 kg less CO₂ released into the atmosphere every day—a win-win situation for both the company and the environment.

The same logic applies if a bottled water company optimizes how bottles are arranged in its trucks, if a furniture manufacturer optimizes the movement of intermediate products, if a food distributor improves delivery routes, or if an airline streamlines its flight paths.

In every case, the result would be lower costs for the company and a reduced use of natural resources: a sustainable relationship between present and future growth.
